Kansas City Grid Reliability Project

The Kansas City economy and population have continued to grow over the years, driving increased energy demand. During peak use, Evergy must occasionally take a transmission line offline to prevent overloading. This means leaving some local areas with a single power path vulnerable to outages if that path fails.

To address this, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), which oversees electrical reliability across a 14-state region, including Kansas City, identified the need for improved reliability redundancy in Kansas City. They have directed Evergy to build a new 161 kV transmission line through a Notice to Construct (NTC).

Evergy is studying the area between the two substations to determine the route for the new transmission line. The goal is to identify a viable route that minimizes impacts to residents, properties and the environment.

At this early stage of the project, the line has not been designed, and we don’t have specifics on pole location, size or material. Potential routes will help the Evergy team better determine what the line will look like.

Public involvement is a key part of this process. Evergy will gather feedback from residents, neighbors, community organizations and state and local officials through a series of meetings and public open houses as the preferred route is selected.

Evergy is committed to working with the community in the project planning process to minimize impacts while delivering safe, reliable power.
