Emissions-free and renewable energy lets us use energy from the wind and sun when the weather cooperates, balanced with coal, natural gas and nuclear power when it doesn't. 

This flexibility helps protect customers from fuel price spikes and keep costs stable over time. All while ensuring 24/7 reliability. 

While our communities continue to grow, we are expanding our use of renewable energy while also scaling up total energy-generation capacity to meet future needs.

Nuclear

The Wolf Creek Generating Station in Burlington, Kan., has been operating safely for more than 40 years. Nuclear power is a cost-effective way to provide reliable energy 24/7.

Natural Gas

Our natural gas plants help us meet energy needs on the highest demand days with "dispatchable" energy that can be scaled up and down.

Coal

Coal-based energy is reliable in all types of weather, even in extreme heat/cold, and on days when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow.

Kansas is 4th in the nation at producing emissions-free, renewable wind energy. On some days, it represents almost 50% of our total energy production.

Solar

Emissions-free solar energy is efficient when the sun shines. Evergy plans to add several new solar generation facilities in coming years.

Keeping pace with the energy needs of our communities

To support both business and residential growth in our service area, Evergy received regulatory approval to construct two combined-cycle natural gas plants, one simple-cycle natural gas power plant, and three large-scale solar projects.

Together, these will provide roughly 2,200 MW of new generation and will support our strategy to deliver reliable power at the lowest cost to customers.

Combined-cycle natural gas plants generate electricity in two steps, so they get more energy from the same natural-gas fuel source.


Expanding renewable energy

Construction is currently underway on two new solar projects, which are expected to be online and producing power in 2027.

Foxtrot Solar Energy located near Joplin in Jasper County, Mo., will produce up to 107 MW of emissions-free energy, while Sunflower Sky in Wilson County, Kan., has a planned capacity of 65 MW.

The two projects will produce enough energy to power about 130,000 average-sized homes.
